Protest!
Manchester Met History, Politics and Philosophy Students bring Protest Stories to life through Digital Storytelling.
Manchester Met Students Explore the Power of Protest Through Digital Storytelling.
Students from the BA (Hons) History, Politics and Philosophy programme at Manchester Metropolitan University worked closely with staff and Manchester Histories to explore the theme of protest—past and present—through creating a series of digital magazines. Drawing on rich resources such as archives, online collections, photo libraries, and even personal family histories, the students created original stories that connect deeply with both local and global movements for change.
From Manchester’s own radical history to international struggles for justice, the work blends academic research with personal passion. One group, for example, explored the miners’ strikes, inspired by their own family members who had worked in the pits, bringing their cultural heritage into sharp focus. Each group brought a unique perspective, uncovering stories that highlight how protest has shaped cities, communities, and lives.
The resulting work is not only a celebration of historical inquiry and creative expression but also a reflection on why protest matters today. Looking to the past to better understand the future, these students offer powerful insights into resistance, activism, and the ongoing fight for social justice. This project is also especially significant as it offered students the opportunity to work with an external cultural organisation, supporting their career development and providing valuable experience beyond the classroom. It also reflects the university’s commitment to meaningful public engagement and knowledge-sharing beyond academia.

Manchester Histories would like to thank the team at the Department of History, Politics and Philosophy for enabling us to work together on one of their important programmes and all the students whose creativity, hard work, and dedication brought these digital magazines to life. Their thoughtful research, bold ideas, and collaborative spirit made this project not only possible but powerful. They explored complex themes with care, challenged perspectives, and created something that informs, inspires, and provokes meaningful conversation.
We are proud to share your work—and even prouder of the voices behind it. Thank you.
