Music and Protest
Protest Through Music
Protest Through Music
This digital magazine explores how music has been used as a powerful tool of protest. The focus is on Manchester’s rich musical history and how local bands have used their platforms to campaign for social and political causes.
We examine a variety of genres and how different movements have adapted music as a form of resistance. This includes Rock Against Racism—both in Manchester and across the UK—as well as the punk scene in the city, which challenged social norms and stood firmly against far-right ideologies.
We also explore how bands like The Stone Roses used their platform to protest against the control of record labels over smaller artists, bringing wider attention to industry injustices that still affect musicians today.
Music, as an art form, often transcends words. It has the power to inspire action, shift perspectives, and unite people. Our magazine aims to show that music is not just entertainment—it’s a force for change.
