Shadow Play Toolkit
An activity resource for children & young people that explores the creative use of shadow play to tell stories about local histories. Can be used in the classroom or in community settings.
In the summer of 2024, international artist/puppeteer Rachel Riggs’ brought her captivating ‘Shadow Play’ workshops to schools across Greater Manchester, igniting young imaginations as part of Manchester City of Literature’s Festival of Libraries. A county-wide celebration of Greater Manchester’s 133 libraries. A workshop also took place at the Manchester Histories Hub within Manchester Central Library, where families gathered for a magical ‘Sunday Funday’ on June 16th to explore the wonders of storytelling through light and shadow.
This short video takes a look at what happened.
If you want to try it yourself, below is a helpful activity sheet that you can use to start exploring your own shadow play!
We used these brilliant Living in the Past resources from Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council for the workshops in schools aimed at Victorian Children’s History. See HERE.
